How to Update Vodafone SMART U8160 with Cyanogen Mod 7.2 Custom Firmware

Essential Pre Requisites:
  • All the data present in your phone should be backed up as in the process of applying this update, the data might get either lost or corrupted. With the help of below mentioned steps you can easily backup the same. After updating with this release, your PC Suite will no longer support the device as it’s in the custom ROM firmware.
SMS – Use “SMS Backup & Restore app”,
Contacts – Sync with the Gmail application,
Call Log - Call Log and Restore
Images, Songs, Videos, Files – Copy to internal / External SD Card,
APN and MMS Settings – Note down from the path “Applications > Settings > Wireless and Network > Mobile Networks > Access Point Names
  • Minimum charge left in the device should be at least 60% so as to ensure that device doesn’t get turned Off in the middle of firmware update.
  • Disable all the antivirus suites in your computer and uninstall the same in your device as these tools generally tend to interrupt the process of firmware update.
  • Enable the USB Debugging in your Vodafone SMART from the path “Settings > Applications > Development > USB debugging”. The USB Debugging option should be ticked as shown in the below screen capture.

Irrespective of the current firmware you are ON, you need to ensure that you have rooted the same as this firmware and also the custom recovery image should be installed in your device.


Procedure to Update Vodafone SMART with Cyanogen Mod 7.2 Firmware:
  • Download the Cyanogen Mod firmware Package and Google Apps from here to your computer and once these files are downloaded you will have to connect your phone to the computer using the original USB cable which you got at the time of purchase.
  • Copy both these files in your phone, ensure that you are not placing these files deep into the phone so as to ensure that these files are detected in the recovery mode.
  • Now, you will have to remove the connected USB cable and turn Off the phone so that the phone can be entered in the recovery mode. To enter the device in the recovery mode, you need to restart your device by holding down the ‘power’ & ‘volume up’ keys.
  • Now, you will have to select “install zip from sd card” > “choose zip from sd card” and then choose the Cyanogen Mod 7.2 Zip file which is placed in the phone.
  • Once you select the file, it will take around 5 – 10 minutes for the update to get applied. As soon as the update is applied successfully, you will see that the device will land up in the recovery mode screen. Now, in the recovery mode, select “++++ Go Back ++++” and then choose the option of “reboot system now” for rebooting the system.
Tip: Just in case if due to some reasons if the cyanogen mod 7.2 installation process gets failed or interrupted, then you need to repeat the update process again by following the steps again from the start. Don’t forget to restore the backup which you have taken in the initial steps.
