How to Unlock Bootloader of Sony Ericsson Xperia S – Easy Tutorial

Got an all new Sony Ericsson Xperia S? Then we are here with an article with which you can easily unlock the boot loader which is a first step towards the installation of third party applications and custom ROM firmwares. Please be informed that once you unlock the boot loader, the warranty will get void. The only way with which you can reclaim the lost warranty is by re applying the original firmware and relocking the boot loader which we will be coming up very shortly if possible. Over a period of this article, you need to follow the list of pre requisites along with the detailed tutorial on how to unlock the boot loader of Sony Ericsson Xperia S.

Quick Pre Requisites:
  • Backup all the data present in your Xperia S so as to ensure that just in case if the data gets lost or corrupted, the same can be restored easily. With the help of below mentioned steps, you can easily backup / restore the data.

Contacts – Sync with the Gmail application,
Notes – Manually save the notes in your mail as these will be lost in the process of firmware update

APN and MMS Settings – Note down from the path “Applications > Settings > Wireless and Network > Mobile Networks > Access Point Names
  • Minimum charge left in the device should be at least a minimum of 70% so as to ensure that the device doesn’t get turned Off in the middle of boot loader unlock process.
  • Up next enable the USB Debugging Mode in your phone. Enable USB Debugging in your device from the path “Settings > Applications > Development > USB debugging”. The USB Debugging option should be ticked in your phone as shown in the below screen capture.
  • Keep IMEI number handy by noting down on a piece of paper which you can get by dialing “*#06#” in your dialer. After this, you need to Download Fast boot Package with USB Drivers from here to your computer. As of now this only supports in the Windows Based computers.
  • Power Off the Phone and keep pressing the Volume Up button and connect the phone to the computer which will then trigger the FASTBOOT mode and then Windows will start the driver installation process after which you need to point the driver installation to the USB_Driver location.
  • As soon as the drivers are installed, you need to disconnect the connected phone from the computer and turn ON the phone in the normal mode.  Procedure to Unlock Boot loader of Sony Ericsson Xperia S:
    • Go to Official SONY Boot loader Unlock Page from your internet browser and then at the bottom of the page, click on “Start Unlocking the Bootloader” as shown in the below screen capture.

    • First, you should confirm that it is possible to unlock the boot loader of your phone by checking the service menu. In your phone, open the dialer and enter *#*#7378423#*#* to access the service menu.
    • In your phone, tap Service info > Configuration > Rooting Status. If Bootloader unlock allowed says Yes, then you can continue with the next step. If it says No, or if the status is missing, your device cannot be unlocked.

    • So, once you have verified that the bootloader is not unlocked, you need to click on “Continue” to proceed and then you will get a prompt which will prompt you, just simply accept the same and then you will need to enter the IMEI, name and email address.

    • Download and unzip this file. This is the standard android_winusb.inf-file, with a few lines of code added to enable Fastboot to support Sony and Sony Ericsson devices. Make sure you are running Google USB Driver package revision 4 or higher in your Android SDK. You can see current Google USB Driver package revision in the SDK Manager.
    • After this, you will get the unique unlock key which you will have to note it down somewhere safely as it can be of use in future as well. After this, you need to extract the fastboot_with_Android_USB_file.rar and open the fastboot folder.
    • Now, hold the Shift key and press the right click on the background of the folder and select “Open command window here”.
    • Connect your phone in fastboot mode (turn phone off, hold Volume UP button and plug in USB Cable) (Make sure drivers are installed as explained above). In the cmd windows type in the below mentioned command,
    fastboot.exe -i 0x0fce getvar version
    • If a value is returned (it will return 0.5), it means the phone is correctly connected. After this, type in the below mentioned command,
    fastboot.exe -i 0x0fce oem unlock 0xKEY
    In the above command, replace the “KEY” with the key which you have received earlier. So, after entering the key there you go, you have now successfully unlocked the bootloader of the device.
