Honky Tonk: Portraits of Country Music 

Thursday April 23

6:30-9pm

Honky Tonk is a collection of photographs taken between 1968 and 2010 that document the changing world of country music and its fans. Shot in bars, music ranches and famous venues like Nashville's Ryman Auditorium, Horenstein not only shows us the performers on stage, but also the dedication and love the fans have for the performers and the music. Of the Project Horenstein says, “all along, in my historian's mind, I always saw this as a disappearing world that I wanted to preserve on film.” As such, Horenstein began this project at a time when he saw the world of country music changing, and wanted to capture it as it was before it turned into the big-business that it is today. “I expect that everyone will remember mega stars like Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash, but I wonder: Will they remember Kitty Wells, Ernest Tubb, or, for that matter, Hillbilly Tex? These pictures were made in hopes that they will,” says Horenstein

The work will be on display from April 23 through May 31, 2015, with an opening on April 23rd.

Portfolio Review with Henry Horenstein

Do you have a body of work that needs fresh eyes? Perhaps you need some help in making final selects for a portfolio review/book/exhibition? Heck, maybe you’d like to spend 20 minutes chatting about the weather?

Well, renowned photographer Henry Horenstein will be reviewing a limited number of portfolios on Thursday April 23. The reviews are 20 minutes each and will take place in the NOPA Gallery at 1111 Saint Mary Street, New Orleans, LA.

Exploring Frenchmen Street with Henry Horenstein

April 25 and 26

Presentation of work: April 27

Join Henry Horenstein for a two day workshop exploring Frenchmen street during Jazzfest weekend. The main purpose of the workshop is to get students think about how their work connects and how to develop their own unique vision. Henry will talk about working on projects, working for purpose (books, exhibition, etc.), and making a career in photography. Of course anything else students want to discuss, whether philosophical, creative, professional or technical is on the table as well.

The timetable is as follows:
On Saturday April 25 you will meet at the NOPA Gallery from 2 - 5pm where Henry will give a brief overview of his work and approach. There will also be an informal portfolio review and viewing of participants' work. Participants will then meet on Frenchmen (location TBD) at 6pm and from 6:30 to 9:30 Henry will be available to help guide with the shooting.

Back at NOPA on Sunday April 26 from 2 to 6pm, Henry will meet with class to view work, critique and discuss Saturday’s shoot. Naturally, we will also discuss issues of sequencing, publishing and promoting work in the 21st century.

Lastly, on Monday April 27th, participants will give a public presentation at the NOPA gallery showcasing their work from Frenchmen.

About Henry Horenstein

Henry Horenstein has been a professional photographer, teacher, and author since the 1970s. He studied history at the University of Chicago and earned his BFA and MFA at Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), where he is now professor of photography. Henry's work is collected and exhibited internationally, and he has published over 30 books, including Black & White Photography: A Basic Manual, and Digital Photography: A Basic Manual, used by hundreds of thousands of college, university, high-school, and art-school students as their introduction to photography. 

He has also published several monographs of his own work, including Show, Honky Tonk, Animalia, Humans, Racing Days, Close Relations, and many others. His recent film Spoke has been screened at several venues, including the Austin Film Festival and the Alexandria Film Festival. Henry lives in Boston.

The Jazz Fest Show

Exhibition April 25 through May 14, 2014.

The Angela King Gallery will present “The Jazz Fest Show,” an exhibit by award-winning photographer Steven Forster celebrating  the arrival of the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival .

Forster will show 15 archival black and white photos, some new and some from his vault, including iconic images of:Ella Fitzgerald, Ray Charles, Dr. John, Fats Domino, Wynton Marsalis, Allen Toussaint and more. The exhibit is timed to celebrate Ella Fitzgerald’s 97th Birthday and to welcome visitors to the 45th New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival April 25 through May 4, 2014.

Forster’s photography is included in the permanent collections of the New Orleans Museum of Art, the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, the Historic New Orleans Collection, the Contemporary Arts Center, and many more. His work has been included in exhibitions alongside master photographers Ansel Adams, Walker Evans, Clarence John Laughlin, and Weegee, as well as exhibitions in New York City with Yoko Ono, LeRoy Neiman, Peter Max and Tony Bennett.

Forster writes and shoots for the Party Central page that appears twice weekly in the daily New Orleans Advocate newspaper. Previously, for 20 years, his work appeared on the Big Easy page of The Times-Picayune. In his most recent awards from the New Orleans Press Club, Forster was honored in July 2013 with first place for multi-feature still photography.
