Octavia Art Gallery is pleased to present our first solo exhibition with Louisiana-based artist Debbie Fleming Caffery. Southern Work will bring together two distinct series that have been pivotal subjects for Caffery throughout her career as well as a recent project inspired by her grandchildren.

Growing up in Louisiana, Caffery was exposed to the distinct and strongly rooted Cajun and African-American communities of the region, absorbing these cultures into her heart and imagination. It is through this lens that the artist was drawn to documenting the seasonal sugar cane harvest. Caffery has been exploring this subject matter since the 1970s and for this exhibition she has printed never-before-seen images from that time period along with images from more recent shoots. While the process of sugar cane harvesting is intense, dangerous and industrial, Caffery achieves a balance of strength and tenderness, darkness and light through her expert employment of shadow, contrast and mysterious composition. The results are a “visual articulation of an emotional and sensual response to stories heard and the smells and sounds in the environment.”

Caffery has been featured in many solo exhibitions at institutions and galleries such as the Smithsonian National Museum of American History, Washington, D.C.; the Museum of Contemporary Photography, Chicago; the Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland; and the Museum of Photographic Arts, San Diego. Her work has also been included in many group exhibitions both nationally and internationally. Caffery is the recipient of numerous awards including a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2005, a Katrina Media Fellowship, Open Society Institute, George Soros Foundation in 2006, and the first Lou Stoumen Mid Career Grant from the Museum of Photographic Arts, San Diego in 1996. Her work is included in several prominent collections such as the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Smithsonian National Museum of American History, Washington, D.C.; and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles, to name a few.

Michael P. Smith Fund Accepting Applications for $5,000 Grant

 through March 30, 2015

The New Orleans Alliance (NOPA) is currently accepting applications for the Michael P. Smith Fund for Documentary Photography(MPS Fund) 2015 grant. This fund, established by NOPA to honor the legendary New Orleans photographer Michael P. Smith, awards one $5,000 grant annually to a Gulf Coast photographer whose work combines artistic excellence and a sustained commitment to a long-term cultural documentary project. We are proud to announce our 2015 juror, Emma Reynes, Director of Programs at the Magnum Foundation.

Both emerging and established photographers residing in the Gulf Coast states of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida are eligible to apply. The subject matter for the proposed project, however, is not limited to the Gulf Coast region. NOPA will accept grant applications through March 30, 2015. The MPS Fund, founded in 2008, is proud to have supported the work of five documentary photographers: Jonathon Traviesa (New Orleans, LA); Scott Dalton (Houston, TX); Kael Alford (Dallas, TX); Andrew Kaufman (Miami, FL) and Brandon Thibodeaux (Dallas, TX).

As Director of Programs at the Magnum Foundation, Ms. Reynes supports independent photographers to cover under-reported stories and imagine innovative means for distribution and engagement. She is also a member of the faculty at the International Center of Photography in NYC. Emma holds a BA in Art History and an MA in Cultural Anthropology from the New School for Social Research and completed a Hine Documentary Fellowship at Duke University’s Center for Documentary Studies.

The New Orleans Photo Alliance is comprised of a diverse group of photographers who joined forces in 2006 to create unity and opportunity for photographers in the Gulf South. It is an artist-run 501(c)3 nonprofit which currently includes more nearly 400 members from across Louisiana and throughout the United States. NOPA sponsors numerous photographic exhibitions, workshops and educational programs, and coordinates PhotoNOLA, an annual photography festival in New Orleans.

New Orleans Photo Alliance members are invited to submit images for a slideshow which will be projected at the Eiffel Society Pay-It-Forward Happy Hour on March 11th. At this mixer, on the eve of the SPE National Conference, a slideshow featuring NOPA members' work will be looping throughout the night.

To have your work included, please submit 5 to 10 images in the following format:

On March 11th – the eve of the 2015 SPE National Conference in New Orleans – Eiffel Society will host a Pay It Forward Happy Hour benefiting the New Orleans Photo Alliance.

NOPA and SPE members, and all who love photography or appreciate a good cocktail, are invited to attend. There is no cover charge.

Once a part of the Eiffel Tower in Paris, during the 1940’s, Eiffel Society is a contemporary arts & entertainment venue on St. Charles Avenue. Their weekly “Pay it Forward” Happy Hour Series donates 20% of proceeds to New Orleans’ great non-profits.

Mark Steinmetz – Off Interstate 40, Knoxville 1993

Mark Steinmetz lives and works in Athens, Georgia. His work transcends the traditional boundaries of documentary, street, and fine art photography. Photographing almost exclusively in black and white, Steinmetz explores the fragile and sublime visual tapestry of everyday life, where the mundane and banal become elevated to the exquisite through the lens of his camera. Mark Steinmetz: South will include photographic selections from three of his books published by Nazraeli Press – South East, South Central and Greater Atlanta, along with a compilation of new and unseen work.

The artist will be present for the exhibition opening on January 17th (from 6 to 8pm)  and will lead a gallery talk on Sunday, January 18th at 1pm.

Admission for each event is $10/ free for Ogden members.

Díaz is a writer, art critic, and art historian at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York. Over the past decade, Díaz’s writings have appeared in magazines and journals such as Artforum, Art Journal, Art-Agenda, Art in America, Cabinet, Frieze, Grey Room, Modern Painters, and October, as well as in numerous exhibition catalogues and anthologies. In 2012, she was awarded a Creative Capital / Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grant for her book-in-progress, The Fuller Effect: The Critique of Design in Postwar Art. Her book, The Experimenters: Chance and Design at Black Mountain College, was published in December 2014 by the University of Chicago Press.

Eva Díaz is the second critic to visit New Orleans as part of Pelican Bomb's innovative dual-city residency program. Created in partnership with BURNAWAY in Atlanta, the program invites three critics from throughout the country to travel to New Orleans and Atlanta for weeklong stays. Designed for the critic who prioritizes connection, discussion, and community engagement, residents spend their time in each city connecting with local artists, writers, institutions, and their publics.

The Critic-in-Residence program in New Orleans is generously supported by grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, Lambent Foundation, and the Joan Mitchell Foundation.

PROJECT LAUNCH GRANT

CENTER has an open international photographic Call for Submissions for the Project Launch, a prestigious award that supports photographic projects.

The Project Launch is granted to an outstanding photographer working in fine art series or documentary project. The grant includes a cash award to help complete or disseminate the works, as well as providing a platform for exposure and professional development opportunities.

This grant is awarded to complete or nearly completed projects that would benefit from the grant award package.
