New Orleans' Ogden Museum of Southern Art is seeking entries for "Louisiana Contemporary," a statewide, juried exhibition of contemporary art as produced by people living in Louisiana.

The deadline for entry is Wednesday, June 18. 

The exhibit, presented by Regions Bank, will open on White Linen Night, the gallery night and street party in the Warehouse District and Julia Street, which will fall this year on Saturday, August 2. It will close on September 28.

Jonathan P. Binstock, the senior advisor for contemporary art for Citigroup's Citi Private Bank Art Advisory & Finance, will serve as juror for this year's exhibit.


Up to $3,000 in awards will be presented to participating artists, including a $1,000 Best of Show cash award.

Any artist living in Louisiana, working in any artistic medium, is eligible for entry. A nonrefundable fee for entry of $40 for up to three submissions is required. The fee for each additional entry is $10.

The New Orleans Alliance (NOPA) has extended the deadline for applications for the Michael P. Smith Fund for Documentary Photography (MPS Fund) 2014 grant. Submissions will be accepted through April 23rd.

This fund, established by NOPA to honor the legendary New Orleans photographer Michael P. Smith, awards one $5,000 grant annually to a Gulf Coast photographer whose work combines artistic excellence and a sustained commitment to a long-term cultural documentary project. We are proud to announce our 2014 juror, Michael Famighetti, the editor of Aperture magazine.

Both emerging and established photographers residing in the Gulf Coast states of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida are eligible to apply. The subject matter for the proposed project, however, is not limited to the Gulf Coast region. NOPA will accept grant applications through April 23, 2014.

Michael Famighetti is the editor of Aperture magazine. He has edited numerous photography books, including volumes by William Christenberry, Robert Adams, John Divola, Jonas Bendiksen, and a series based on the website Tiny Vices. His writing has appeared in Frieze, Bookforum, Aperture, and OjodePez, among other publications. Famighetti has served as a judge for the American Society of Magazine Editors National Magazine Awards and has been a guest reviewer and speaker at many international photography festivals and institutions, including the Bamako Biennial, Mali; Krakow PhotoMonth, Poland; GuatePhoto. Guatemala; Rhubarb Rhubarb, Birmingham, U.K.

The New Orleans Museum of Art, in partnership with the New Orleans Photo Alliance, is pleased to present PhotoNOMA, a photographers’ portfolio sharing night at the museum. 100 photographers, from beginners to the well established, will display their work for a community walk-through.

About Courtney:Courtney Asztalos is a photographer living and working in New Orleans. Prior to moving to New Orleans,Courtney received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Art with a concentration in Photography from Florida State University. Her work has been exhibited and is featured in several special collections including UCLA Arts Library, Duke University, Texas Tech University, Vanderbilt University, University of Central Florida and the University of Miami.

The Ogden Museum of Southern Art of New Orleans is seeking a photography intern, with the job involving the documenting of events and programs for public relations and marketing purposes.

Jim Belfon passed away this weekend surrounded by family, friends and loved ones.

In his short time here in New Orleans  he established the Gulf South Photography Project which has taught free photography workshops to more than 1200 young people and senior citizens.  To help New Orleans recover from the devastation following Katrina,he provided residents who lost priceless family momentos with more than 14,000 individual and family portraits.

During Jim's active career, he worked and studied with the likes of James Van Der Zee, Gordon Parks and Richard Avedon. His work has appeared in Time Magazine, Essence, Sports Illustrated, Architectural Digest, Harper’s Bazaar, The New York Times.

Twenty-five years ago, he created the Photographic Center of Harlem where he taught photography to children and senior citizens in NYC at Harlem School Of The Arts, Central Park East School, St. James Senior Citizen Center, and New Song Community Church. Over its history, the Center served more than 5,000 children and senior citizens in the Greater New York City area.

The memorial service for Jim Belfon is set for  this Saturday, March 29th at 1pm at Christian Unity Baptist Church, 1700 Conti Street, New Orleans, La.  A repast will follow.

A new exhibit of work from NOPA member Zack Smith “One Foot in the Swamp - Portraits and Daydreams as Photographs," opens on April 12 at the Scott Edwards Gallery, in the Marigny area of New Orleans.

This exhibition is to feature a collection of 16 large photographs culled from portraits of musicians.

Hatch Show Print exhibit poster, prints offered

In association with the gallery, Smith will be offering a limited edition (only 100 available) of a 14” x 22” Hatch Show Print poster, as shown below. Nashville's famous Hatch Show Print, opened in 1879, is one of the oldest,  continuously running letterpress print shops in America. Included with every Hatch Show Print will be a limited edition, signed and numbered, 8” x 12” pigment print of the exhibitions figurehead shot, “Seth Walker, 2014.”

Copies of Smith's new book of photos, "One Foot in the Swamp," with images from the exhibition, will also be available.
